Big data can be defined as information that is too big or complex to be contained or processed by any one machine or person.

As a student at the University of Sussex,Julian Dailly had two majors—English and philosophy. When he completed his studies,Dailly wondered how he could ever earn a living in a world filled with machines and technology. Now,he is part of the big data industry that includes Google and Facebook.

Dailly's research company,Morar Consulting, started three years ago with five employees. The company's earnings have increased by 25% each year. It now employs 90 people.“What we do here is we try to discover what's meaningful for people and link that to their economic behavior.”Dailly said.

He noted the importance of working with people with different skills.“We have people from traditional research background,in addition to some in social sciences, economics, people from tech backgrounds, and sales people.”Dailly said.

Companies like Dailly's employ recent college graduates. The industry profits from the idea of these young man and women. New forms of data also make it possible for some observers to predict the future. They are more valuable to companies than the traditional forms of data recording or reporting.

“We have access to the core information inside people's heads.”Dailly said.“They tell you what peoples are going to do as opposed to what they've done. That helps people take proper action in advance. This makes it much more useful for strategy.”

Harriette finished in 7 hours,24 minutes,36 seconds, the BBC reports, coming close to the over-90 record of 7hours,7 minutes, and 42 seconds she set in 2014,despite having a very difficult year between marathons.“I couldn't train very well because my husband was very ill and I had to be with him for some time, and then when he died in January I had some treatments on my leg,” Thompson, who was in her 70s when she ran her first marathon, tells the AP. “I was just really thrilled that I could finish today.”

At 92 years and 65 days old,Thompson is 46 days older than Gladys Burrill was when Burrill finished the 2010 Honolulu Marathon.“I can't believe I made it,”Thompson tells the Charlotte Observer.“I was really tired at one point. Around Mile 21,I was going up a hill and it was like a mountain, and I was thinking,‘This is sort of crazy at my age. I can't do it.’But then I felt better coming down the hill. And my son Brenny kept feeding me all these wonderful carbohydrates(碳水化合物) that kept me going.”Thompson—whose parents, three brothers, and husband all died of cancer—tells the Observer that the San Diego marathon's fundraising for the Leukemia(白血病) Society is what inspired her to run and may even bring her back again next year.

        Passage Three

Before the grass has thickened on the roadsides and leaves have started growing on the trees is a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain has become. The pavements are stained with chewing gum and the ditches are full of discarded fast food packets. Years ago I remember traveling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags and discarded bottles. Nowadays,Britain seems to look at least as bad. What has gone wrong?

The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives last a lot longer than before. If it is not cleared up and properly thrown away,it stays in the undergrowth(下层灌木) for years.

It is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. These will take anything from 100 to 1000 years to rot. However,it is not as if there is no solution to this. A few years ago,the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months reduced their use by 90%. When he was a minister,Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. The plastic industry protested,of course. However, they need not have bothered;the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags.

What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined action, both individual and collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast rubbish tip. We may well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to their environment. If things around them clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they are surrounded by rubbish, they behave like rubbish. Now,much of Britain looks pretty dirty. What will it look like in five years?

26.What might be the best title for this passage?

           D. the government did not support them

        28.The expression “sliding downhill”(Para.4) probably means“          ”.

           B. producing more plastic bags

           C. encouraging people to use plastic bags

           D. making things worse by taking no action

        Passage Four

Those who work in the Netherlands often feel that a lot of time is wasted in discussions that lead to nothing. There are often meetings with documents,an agenda and a chairmen. All those present will have their say, after which their remarks are discussed.

He who decides to skip a meeting though he has nothing more urgent to attend to,will find it unwise. The interacting that takes place during a meeting is very important for the general process. He who does not appear is saying that he does not think the subject is sufficiently important,or that the apparently does not take his colleagues seriously. Furthermore,he might miss some of the essential information that may become evident during the meeting. Those who are present show an interest in the problems of their colleagues. They supply questions, rather than commands, and thus declare themselves “co-responsible”. The Dutch,in their final conclusions, like to use such metaphors as “We are all in one line” or “Our noses are pointing in the same direction again”.

If you present a decision, you will find that everyone has something to say about it and has questions to ask. This is why the Dutch will not be quick to present something as the only correct solution. The advantage to this approach is that such a meeting will often lead to genuine suggestions for improvement on certain aspects of a plan. As a result, the plan will be a joint approach.

This time-consuming and seemingly useless process helps colleagues become a team. The amount of time that is lost around the table is more than what made up for inefficiency, once everyone goes back to work. Statistics show Dutch employees are among the world leaders when it comes to work productivity.

           B. may have something more urgent to do

           C. does not miss much critical information

           D. may have nothing to say at the meeting

33.According to Paragraph 3,why can't Dutch employees come to a quick decision?

           A. People are constantly in dispute.

           B. An idea usually undergoes a full discussion.

           C. Suggestions often lead nowhere.

           D. People often forget the aims of meeting.

34.What does the last paragraph tell us?

           A. Many leaders in the world are Dutch.

           B. Dutch employees are highly productive.

           C. Dutch companies are the most successful in the world.

           D. Dutch employees work hardest in the world.

选项A. Don't say thanks,选项B. Don't be so polite,选项C. You are so polite,这三个选项的意思分别是“不要说谢谢”“别这么客气”“你太客气了”,都是中式英语的回复方式。 对于“Thank you for...”

A. Hello,can you tell me your name?“你好,能告诉我你的名字吗?”选项C. May I have your account number?“可以告诉我您的帐号吗?” D. OK,Thank you for your help.“好的,谢谢你的帮助。” B. I'm calling about my electricity bill.

A. engineering(工科);C. sciences(理科);D. business(商科)。

Now he is... big data industry...

第四段:“...people from traditional research background,in addition to some in social sciences, economics, people from tech backgrounds, and sales people.”第五段:“... employ recent college graduates. The industry profits from the idea of these young man and women. New forms of data ...”这几句话包含了选项A. fresh ideas,B. young age,C. mixed education backgrounds,唯独没有D选项中的rich experience in the field(这个领域经验丰富的人)。

根据题干“humans may be replaced by machines”可以定位到最后一段:“Some may worry that humans will be allowed to be replaced by machines. I think it's a fantasy.”

            Julian Dailly

        Passage Two

        Rock‘n’Roll

        despite            prep.

        treatment          n.

        thrilled           adj.

        inspire            vt.

通过题干中的San Diego marathon、next year可以定位至第一段:...she hasn't ruled out running the Rock‘n’Roll Marathon in San Diego marathon next year. 选项D中is likely to表示“有可能……”

通过题干中over-90 marathon record可以定位在第一段:...coming close to the over-90 record of 7 hours,7 minutes,and 42 seconds she set in 2014...

通过题干中in that difficult year可以定位至第一段:...despite having a very difficult year between marathons. I couldn't train very well because my husband was very ill and I had to be with him for some time...与选项A. She took care of her husband. 所以选A。尽管在...and then when he died in January I had some treatments on my leg.

定位至第二段Thompson跟Charlotte Observer说的一段话:“I can't believe I made it,”...“This is sort of crazy at my age. I can't do it. But then I felt better coming down the hill. And my son Brenny kept feeding me all these wonderful carbohydrates that kept me going.” A. ran faster than last time(比上次跑得快);选项B. once considered giving up(曾想放弃),C. was confident she could make it(自信能跑下来),这三个选项均与文章内容不符。选项D. could hardly move in the end(差点不能坚持到最后)与定位内容表述一致。

通过题干中的inspire可以定位至最后一段的最后一句:...the San Diego marathon's fundraising for the Leukemia(白血病) Society is what inspired her to run and may even bring her back again next year. A. Setting her son a good example.(给她儿子树立好榜样),B. Setting a new marathon records.(创造新的马拉松记录),D. Living up her own promise.(履行自己的承诺),这三个选项在文中并未提及。选项C. Raising money for cancer treatment.

        vast                 adj.

Dirty Britain。

通过题干中的plastics industry、protest定位至第三段:...the Irish government introduced a tax on non-recyclable carrier bags...,Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement in Britain. 所以选A。

What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined action, both individual and collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast rubbish tip. D. making things worse by taking no action(不采取行动直至事情变得更糟糕)。

Now,much of Britain looks pretty dirty. What will it look like in five years?(现在,英国很多地方看起来很脏。

B. discourage people from supporting the plastic industry(阻止人们支持塑料行业),选项C. call on the government to protect the environment(呼吁政府保护环境),D. encourage supermarkets to give away recyclable bags(鼓励超市赠送可回收包装袋),三个选项均与文章内容不符,所以选A. encourage the public to take action against rubbish(鼓励公众对垃圾采取行动)。

Those who work in the Netherlands often feel that a lot of time is wasted in discussions that lead to nothing. B. waste a lot of time in fruitless discussions(在耗无结果的讨论中浪费了很多时间)表述一致。

根据题干中one who is absent from a meeting定位至第二段:... or that the apparently does not take his colleagues seriously.与选项A. does not take his colleagues seriously(对待同事不认真)表述一致,所以选A。选项B. may have something more urgent to do与第二段第一句话“...though he has nothing more urgent to attend to...” C. does not miss much critical information与第二段中:“Furthermore,he might miss some of the essential information...” D. may have nothing to say at the meeting与第二段中:“Those who are present show an interest in the problems of their colleagues. They supply questions...”

If you present a decision, you will find that everyone has something to say about it and has questions to ask. This is why the Dutch will not be quick to present something as the only correct solution. The advantage to this approach is that such a meeting will often lead to genuine suggestions for improvement on certain aspects of a plan. B. An idea usually undergoes a full discussion.(一个想法往往要经过充分的讨论)表述一致。所以选B。选项A. People are constantly in dispute.(人们持续争论中),选项C. D. People often forget the aims of meeting.(人们经常忘记会议的目的),这三个选项均不正确。

This time-consuming and seemingly useless process helps colleagues become a team.…Statistics show Dutch employees are among the world leaders when it comes to work productivity.

        Part Ⅴ Writing(15 points)

        Why do people like iPhones?

Nowadays, mobile phones play an important role in our lives. You can find that a lot of people look at their mobile phones carefully when they are waiting for the buses rather than read a newspaper. I am also one of the people who cannot live without mobile phones, because mobile phones bring us some benefits.

There are many brands of mobile phones in the market, such as Oppo,HUAWEI,Samsung,Xiaomi, and so on. But there is one mobile phone that is very popular among modern young people, which is Apple phone, that is,iPhone. I am of no exception.

So many mobile phones, why do people love iPhone alone? The reasons are as follows: iPhone has its unique design-simplicity. There is only one button on the whole interface. Although there is only one button, the function is very powerful. That's the second reason that I'm going to say. The photo taken by an apple camera are in a variety of forms and are particularly good. In addition, during the flight mode,it can charge quickly. Of course,iPhone is powerful, and I don't know many of its setting. It's like a secret garden for me,which makes me have curiosity and desire for exploration.

In a word, there are many reasons why people like iPhones. As far as I am concerned, there is an important reason for it,the founder of it,Jobs. He is a genius and innovative. His life in a legend. He is also a person who changes the world. He always encourages me in his 2005 speech at Stanford University graduation ceremony,“Stay hungry, stay foolish.” This is my motto.
